By applying gentle pressure to your upper molars each time an adjustment is made, the palatal expander will cause your upper jaw to expand or widen. The link to the video animation at the end of this article will provide instructions for you which will include both the when and how to adjust the palatal expander. After you achieve the desired expansion of your mouth cavity, the palatal expander appliance will be worn for several months which will secure the expansion process and prevent regression.
Tilt the patient’s head backwards in a well-lit area.
Insert the palatal expander key in the hole until the key is securely in place.
Press the key towards the rear of the mouth. You will now notice that the palatal expander fender will rotate which will cause a new keyhole to appear. The rotation of the palatal expander key will stop when the key reaches the rear of the palatal expander.
By pressing the palatal key to the rear and at the same time down towards the tongue, remove the palatal expander key. A new hole for insertion of the palatal expander key should now be clearly visible.
